“Everywhere is walking distance if you have the time.” -Steven Wright

This month we sold our car. The "practice" run of me taking the T to work back in November is now permanent. But here's the thing. I think we can totally rock this. We ultimately felt good about getting rid of the car (after I felt sad for a while because it held some good memories), it was a gas guzzler and was getting old. Because public transportation is so good here we can free up some of the air from yucky exhaust, and free up some pennies for extra traveling (fun traveling, not work traveling). So we do the train (Job always has to school), the bus, we have become "zipsters" for when we do need a car (can't give 'em up completely!), I signed up for uber, and I have my taxi preference on speed dial. We also walk because we can. I am not calling total success yet, we have only been doing this for a little over a week, but I think we can own this car-less thing.

Anyone else without a car have tips on getting around?

  1. Look at you guys! That is brave and I am excited to see how you do it!

  2. Try doing Peapod grocery deliveries. Definitely way easier than carrying and they have coupons all the time for free delivery. The only bad thing about that is that you can't just pick up something up on a whim, everything has to be planned.

  3. If/when you get pregnant this may complicate things a bit because of specific food cravings and they come and go SO quickly. By the time you get it, you might not want it anymore. lol. I speak from experience haha. I was so grateful for that time Job took McKay and got Wendy's when I was pregnant because all I wanted was a chocolate frosty and a jr bacon cheeseburger. But since there was no Wendy's within reasonable walking distance I normally couldn't get it but that time I got it! (but if you need food delivery grub-hub that will deliver stuff for you that isn't normally up for delivery)

I had one of those homeless-junk-carrying-carts that I could have given you but I'm not sure what happened to it. That was cumbersome but useful.

Good for you guys for saving the environment!
